Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election. He defeated the Democratic ticket and returned to the White House. His second term began on January 20, 2025 — Inauguration Day — when he took the oath as the 47th president. In this term he is a Republican whose home state is now listed as Florida; Mar-a-Lago is in Palm Beach. He was long a New Yorker. Joe Biden was president immediately before this term (2021–2025). Trump's first term was 2017–2021; his second term is 2025–present. History books leave the end date open because the term is still going.

The vice president of the second term is JD Vance, a senator from Ohio. Mike Pence had been the vice president of the first term; a new term can mean a new running mate. Trump said America First would continue — trade, borders, and alliances framed as serving the United States first, the same banner as 2017. In his 2025 inaugural address he said, “The golden age of America begins right now.”

Trump is the second president to serve two terms that were not in a row. The first was Grover Cleveland. Cleveland's two numbers are 22 and 24; Trump's two numbers are 45 and 47. Biden's 46th presidency sits between them, the way Benjamin Harrison sat between Cleveland's terms. That is why there are 47 presidencies but only 45 people who have been president: Cleveland and Trump each count twice. The 22nd Amendment says a president may be elected twice — the two terms do not have to be back-to-back — and a person who has already been elected twice may not be elected to a third term.
